CAIRO - Egypt’s Prosecutor General Abdel-Mageed Mahmoud has ordered the freezing of assets of former president Hosni Mubarak and his family and banned them from travelling abroad.

Bank accounts of the former president and his family were to be checked, Xinhua quoted Asem el-Gohary, assistant to the justice minister for anti-graft institution as telling MENA news agency Monday.

El-Gohary ordered authorities to investigate the bank accounts related to Mubarak, his wife and sons, and other family members inside and outside Egypt.

The decision came after former parliamentarian Mosutafa Bakry reported to the general prosecutor, accusing Mubarak of exploiting his influences to collect 250 million Egyptian pounds (about $43 million) in Egypt’s Al Ahly Bank.

Accounts under the management of Mubarak’s wife Suzanne Mubarak have deposits estimated at $145 million.

The top prosecutor had ordered travel bans and assets freeze for a number of former senior officials during and after the protests.

Corruption was one of the major complaints of Egyptian protesters.

Mubarak resigned Feb 11 due to massive protests against his regime which left at least 365 dead and over 5,500 injured.
