NEW DELHI - Congress president Sonia Gandhi has given party leader Oscar Fernandes interim charge of Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana states, party sources said here Monday.
The two states were earlier being handled by Prithviraj Chavan, who moved as chief minister of Maharashtra in November.
“Oscar Fernandes has been given interim charge of Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana, a senior party leader told IANS.
Fernandes is chairman of the Congress’ Central Election Authority.
Party sources said the decision comes in the wake of developments in Jammu and Kashmir over the past few weeks following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s decision to hold a march to Srinagar’s Lal Chowk and hoist the national flag there on Republic Day.
The Congress is an alliance partner in the ruling coalition in the state and has questioned the rationale of the march being carried out by the youth wing of BJP.
