Reassess green clearance to Jaitapur n-plant, says BJP

NEW DELHI - The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Tuesday appealed to the central government to reassess the environmental clearance given to the proposed Jaitapur nuclear plant in Maharashtra.
“We suggest that all efforts should be made to address the concerns of local fishermen about fishing and livelihood in Jaitapur. The government should reassess environmental clearance to the nuclear plant,” BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy told reporters here.
The fishermen are protesting the location of the plant, fearing they would not be allowed to carry out fishing in the area for security reasons.
The environment and forests ministry last month accorded clearance to the 9,900 MW Jaitapur nuclear power project slated to come up in Ratnagiri district of the state. The plant will be set up in collaboration with France’s Areva group.
