NEW DELHI - The Congress Tuesday downplayed party general secretary Digvijay Singh’s remarks about former Maharashtra ATS chief Hemant Karkare being a form of God for Muslims, saying he must have used a proverbial expression.

No human being can be compared to God in any religion. He must have used it as a proverb,” Congress spokesman Shakeel Ahmed said.

Answering queries, he said that Digvijay Singh’s intention “was not what has been misinterpreted”.

Singh, who released a book “26/11 RSS ki Saazish” in Mumbai Monday, said: “Hemant Karkare had come forth as a form of Ishwar (God) for Muslims in this country” and “saved a community from being defamed.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Tuesday reacted sharply to Singh’s remarks, saying he was using the “language of divide”. The party sought a clarification from Congress on Singh’s remarks.
