Mumbai remembers Mahatma

MUMBAI - Thousands of students and various organisations across Mumbai Saturday remembered Mahatma Gandhi on his 141st birth anniversary.

More than 500 students from 70 colleges of the University of Mumbai took a pledge of non-violence at an event organised here along with an NGO, Bombay Sarvodaya Mandal.

In another event, 200 members from National Institute of Jihad Against Atrocities and Terrorism (NIJAAT) paid a tribute to Gandhi at his statue at Juhu beach and pledged to eradicate terrorism through non-violence.

At the headquarters of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Rahul Shewale, chairman of the standing committee, garlanded the statue of Gandhi and paid floral tributes.

Office-bearers of the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) also paid tributes to ‘Bapu’, as he was fondly called, by garlanding his statues and portraits at party offices.

Nearly 250 people participated in a “Trash Dash” organised by the Rotract Club at Sanjay Gandhi National Park in suburban Borivli. They gathered more than 1000 kg of trash in four hours.

The birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, is celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti cross the country with reverence. It is also marked as the International Day of Non-Violence around the world.
