ALLAHABAD - People paid homage to nation’s former Prime Minister, Lal Bahadur Shastri, on his 106th birth anniversary here on Saturday.
Students dressed as soldiers and sang patriotic songs to mark the birth centenary of Lal Bahadur Shastri.
Shastri joined Gandhi’s Civil Disobedience Movement in 1930 and also participated in the Quit India Movement of 1942.
He then joined Jawaharlal Nehru’s cabinet in 1952 and after the death of Nehru, he became the Prime Minister of India in 1964.
He coined the slogan of ‘Jai Jawan Jai Kisan’, underlining the need to boost India’s food production.
Shastri died in 1966 in Tashkent, shortly after signing the peace agreement known as the Tashkent Declaration with Pakistan’s President, Muhammad Ayub Khan, after the 1965 war between India and Pakistan. By Virendra Pathak (ANI)
