Giuliani calls for federal anti-gang task force
CHICAGO — Republican Senate candidate Mark Kirk has raised the specter of Chicago gangster Al Capone in arguing that the federal government should be more involved in fighting street gangs nationwide.
Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani appeared with Kirk in Chicago on Monday to endorse legislation that would provide $20 million for a national anti-gang task force.
Giuliani says the gang issue hasn’t received the attention it deserves.
Kirk says the federal government should exert a similar focus in breaking up current street gangs as it did in helping bring down Capone last century.
Kirk is running against Democrat Alexi Giannoulias (jeh-NOO’-lee-us) for President Barack Obama’s former Senate seat.
