Ginsburg talks about television and Supreme Court
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg says television has profoundly changed confirmation hearings, but declined to say whether she’d oppose them.
Ginsburg told a Colorado judicial conference Friday that TV has made Supreme Court confirmation hearings longer because senators posture for cameras. She also said that today’s Senate is different from the one that confirmed her in 1993.
Ginsburg pointed out that in her own confirmation hearings, she wasn’t asked about being a litigator for the American Civil Liberties Union. Ginsburg says, “That would not happen today.”
Ginsburg didn’t say whether she opposes televising arguments, but said she’d defer if other justices opposed cameras.
