Parliament skips knotty bills for the week as sesion resumes

NEW DELHI - As parliament resumed its normal functioning Monday after a week of disruptions, the government played safe by not listing the controversial civil nuclear liability bill and the women’s reservation bill for discussion this week.
Both bills are a litmus test for the government as the women’s reservation bill has some of its own allies against the measure while the nuclear liability bill is being resisted by the major opposition parties.
The opposition to the women’s reservation bill by the Samajwadi Party, the Janata Dal-United (JD-U) and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) continues as they are demanding a sub-quota for the other backward classes.
The Trinamool Congress, led by Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee, the second largest party in the Congress-led ruling alliance, has also opposed the bill in its present form.
The civil nuclear liability bill, on the other hand, has seen
widespread resistance from both the Bhartiya Janata Party and the Left parties, along with some other opposition parties.
In the Lok Sabha, discussion and passing of the Indian Medical Council Bill is among the important mesures listed, according to official sources.
This week’s list of business for the Rajya Sabha includes the Clinical Establishment Bill and the Minority Educational Institutions Amendment Bill, the sources said.
The discussion on the price rise, which is likely on Tuesday in the Lok Sabha and on Wednesday in Rajya Sabha, according to sources, is set to dominate the week’s proceedings.
