Intelligence director pledges cooperation
WASHINGTON — The Obama administration’s nominee for Director of National Intelligence is rebuffing concerns about his ties to the military and says he is independent enough to keep Congress informed if he is confirmed as the next intelligence chief.
Retired Lt. Gen. James R. Clapper pledged to the Senate Intelligence Committee that he will increase the trust between Congress and intelligence leaders. He says he would foster more collaboration and cooperation among the nation’s intelligence agencies.
Leading senators say the next director of national intelligence faces major management challenges caused by the growth in the country’s spy agencies and must be a strong leader who can work well with Congress.
