Calif. judge to OK discovery plan in Toyota case

SANTA ANA, Calif. — A federal judge in California says he will approve a plan for lawyers to share information in the sprawling litigation involving alleged defects in some Toyota vehicles.

A hearing Tuesday before U.S. District Judge James Selna in Orange County focused on the first phase of discovery, which lets attorneys for the plaintiffs and the Japanese automaker begin exchanging documents and taking depositions. Selna says he will approve the plan later Tuesday.

The plan gives attorneys on both sides a 100-day window for the process.

Hundreds of lawsuits have been filed against Toyota Motor Corp. in state and federal court after the automaker began its recall because of acceleration problems in several models and brake glitches with the Prius hybrid.

Selna is overseeing all the federal cases.
