Mumbai Bandh Disrupts Normal Life

MUMBAI, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- The streets of Mumbai is wearing an almost unrecognizable and deserted look today as the nationwide bandh in retaliation to the hike in the prices of fuel by the UPA government began in the city along with the rest of the country. The nationwide strike has been called by the opposition parties comprising of the NDA and the left parties to protest against the increase effected in the prices of petroleum products.
Normal life has been severely disturbed by the bandh in Mumbai as schools, colleges and many private offices as well as other institutions are largely closed. Modes of transportation such as taxis, autos are off the roads in large numbers which has completely paralyzed the city. However, one of the city’s major lifeline, suburban trains have only been partially effected due to the Mumbai bandh while attempts to disrupt the train services is reported to have been made by bandh supporters. At the same time, due to the nationwide strike, the domestic airline services has also been effected in a major manner with 42 arrivals as well as 47 departures reported to be terminated while a single international flight is reported to have been canceled from the Mumbai airport.
Meanwhile, in the wake of the bandh in Mumbai, precautionary measures have been taken by authorities in the city to avoid any kind of untoward incident due to the strike. Police commissioner Sanjeev Dayal has revealed to the media earlier that as many as 40,000 cops are likely to be deployed across the city on Monday in order to ensure that nothing actually goes wrong due to the Mumbai bandh.
