WASHINGTON (GaeaTimes.com)- The gay and lesbians in the USA who aspired to join the army but hesitated to do so owing to the draconian “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, have reasons to rejoice. The House and Senate members have taken active steps to get the much criticized law repealed. This law which has been in use by the US army for over 15 years have been slammed by the LBGT activists several times and they want it to be repealed as it prohibits homosexuals from serving openly in the army. The vote in the House of Representatives yielded a result of 234-194.
The Gays and lesbians may rejoice at this development but before “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy repeal can be legalized in the US constitution, certain procedures need to take place. Representative Patrick Murphy who is a strong detractor of the law said that as long as a soldier serving in the army does his duties well the army should not bother about his sexual orientation. President Barack Obama is also upbeat about the prospect of removing the law. He said in a statement that the legislation will help both the US army and the gay soldiers serving in it.
The republicans are trying to criticize the move and saying there is no need to hurry to repeal the “don’t ask, don’t tell” law and Pentagon should be given adequate time to do a review on the same. If the law is repealed and legal formalities are accomplished it will be a major boost for the US President and also for the gay activists who supported him in the times of his campaign two years back.
