JAMMU - Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and his family would be heading to Ladakh for holidaying this summer. This would be the first time that the third generation leader would be introducing his sons to the region, which has emerged as a major tourist destination.

Omar revealed this at a book release function at the Jammu University Tuesday.

\”I am going to take my family, sons to Ladakh this summer for holidaying,\” Omar told reporters at a function comprising ministers, bureaucrats and university professors.

The book \”Ladakh - Travel, History and Culture\”, authored by S.D.S. Jamwal, deputy inspector general of police (Rajouri-Poonch range), reminded Omar Abdullah of his \”first love affair with Ladakh 33 years ago\”, when he was just seven.

\”That was August 1977, a day after Independence Day that my father, mother, me and three sisters drove to Ladakh,\” Omar recalled about the family holiday when his grandfather Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah ruled the state.

\”Every time he would see any resident of Ladakh, he would wind down the window and say \’Jhule\’ (a way of greeting in Leh),\” Omar said recalling the journey.

\”Now, I will take my sons to Ladakh,\” Omar said.

Omar and his family usually holiday abroad, and when in Jammu and Kashmir, Gulmarg is the favourite holiday destination of the Abdullahs. Omar\’s father is also fond of Gulmarg.

What impressed Omar about Ladakh, which is emerging as a popular destination for tourists from all over because of its barren landscape, mountains, fast flowing rivers and the hospitality of the people, is that it has preserved its heritage. \”There is something unique there,\” he said.

And that\’s why the Abdullahs would be packing their bags for Ladakh this summer.
