WASHINGTON - US President Barack Obama and his family served meals to the homeless to mark Martin Luther King Jr Day.

The president, First Lady Michelle Obama, her mother Marian Robinson and daughters Sasha and Malia served lunch to some 150 guests Monday at So Others Might Eat, a soup kitchen in Washington.

Obama took photos with volunteers and shook hands with those eating meals at the centre. Obama family members then served meals of chicken and poured coffee.

One woman broke into tears when she saw she was being served by the president, a pool report said.

Martin Luther King Day is a US holiday to mark the birth of the civil rights leader who was assassinated in 1968. Volunteer organisations have urged citizens to use the holiday to do service projects.

Obama was also to meet with a group of black senior citizens and their grandchildren to discuss the legacy of the civil rights movement and to attend a concert at the Kennedy Center to honour King’s memory.
