STOCKHOLM - Three employees at the Libyan embassy in Sweden resigned Monday from their jobs to protest the violent crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in the North African country.

The three, who were not Libyan nationals, included a translator and a receptionist. They issued an open letter to the Swedish news agency TT urging other employees to resign.

A group of some 40 Libyans also gathered outside the embassy in Stockholm calling for the government in their home country to resign, local media reported.

Sweden had earlier advised its citizens to avoid all travel to Libya until further notice, citing the ongoing unrest.

The foreign ministry estimated there are some 40 to 50 Swedish nationals in Libya.
