CAIRO - There was an “explosion of emotion” in the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria as soon as Vice President Omar Suleiman announced Friday night that Hosni Mubarak has decided to step down as president.

Hundreds of thousands began to celebrate on the streets of Alexandria, which is one of the major cities that saw a string of protests against Mubarak to end his 30-year rule.

Al Jazeera described the scene as an “explosion of emotion”.
