CAIRO - Egyptian President Hosni Mumbarak may step down in the evening, prime minister Ahmed Shafiq said Thursday.

Ahmed Shafiq told the BBC that the president may step down Thursday evening, and that the situation would be “clarified soon”, Al Jazeera reported.

The Supreme Council of Egyptian armed forces met Thursday to hold discussions on the ongoing protests against the Mubarak-led government.

Hassam Badrawi, the secretary general of the ruling National Democratic Party, told the BBC and Channel 4 News Thursday that he expected Mubarak to hand over power to vice president Omar Suleiman, Al Jazeera reported.

“Everything you want will be realised,” the channel quoted an Egyptian army commander, Hassan al-Roweni, as telling protesters in Cairo’s Tahrir Square Thursday.

The protesters are demanding that Mubarak should step down as president.
