THIRUVANANTHAPURAM - More than a million new voters have been included in Kerala’s updated electoral rolls, which would be used for the forthcoming polls to the state assembly, officials said Monday. The new voters take the state’s total electorate to over 22.8 million.
Addressing reporters here, Chief Electoral Officer Nalini Netto said that 1,085,163 new voters have been included in the lists as on Jan 1, 2011.
“This includes 318,493 voters who are in the age bracket of 18-19. After taking into account the additions and deletions, the total electorate in the state who can exercise their franchise stands at 22,878,767. This is not the final list as additions can be done till the last date of filing of nominations, said Netto.
The total includes 11,919,574 women and 10,959,193 male voters.
The total number of voters for the 2006 April/May assembly polls was 21,483,930, of which 15,486,513 cast their votes.
Netto refused to say when the election notification would be issued but added that the raw material for the elections - the voters list - is ready.
“Tomorrow (Tuesday), Governor R.S.Gavai will hand over the election identity cards to five new voters in the capital. This is just a simple function and all the other new voters can collect their identity cards from their respective polling booths,” said Netto.
