Conn. candidate apologizes over first-woman claim

HARTFORD, Conn. — A Connecticut congressional candidate put out a news release Friday urging voters to make her the first woman elected from the district.

The problem is, she would be its second.

Republican Janet Peckinpaugh’s campaign issued an apology later in the day to the family of former U.S. Rep. Chase Going Woodhouse, who was incorrectly listed on the release as one of 35 men who have represented Connecticut’s 2nd District.

Woodhouse served in Congress from 1945 to 1947, and again from 1949 until 1951.

The error was first reported by The Day of New London on its website.

Peckinpaugh apologized for the oversight, but said 50 years is far too long to wait for another woman to serve the district, which is now represented by Democrat Joe Courtney.
