China premier to meet Obama in New York

BEIJING — China’s premier will meet President Barack Obama at the U.N. General Assembly meeting in New York next week.

Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin said Tuesday the two will discuss a range of bilateral and international issues. He did not elaborate.

The meeting comes amid a push to repair relations stressed by disagreements over everything from trade policy to arms sales to Taiwan.

Premier Wen Jiabao’s meeting with Obama marks a symbolic step in getting ties back on track ahead of a possible visit to Washington in January by China’s president.

President Hu Jintao last week told American officials that China wants healthy ties between the countries.
