ADDIS ABABA - Indians in Ethiopia gathered Sunday at the Indian embassy here to take part in the 64th Independence Day celebrations.

The ceremony began with the hoisting of the Indian flag by Indian Ambassador to Ethiopia Bhagwant Singh Bishnoi. Around 200 members of the Indian community witnessed the event.

After the singing of the national anthem and patriotic songs, a message from President Pratibha Patil was read out by the Indian ambassador.

A press release issued by Indian embassy said that Ethiopian television broadcast a documentary “Friends For Evermore”, depicting India’s engagement with Africa and other countries in the field of capacity building.

“The Addis Ababa Television conducted an interview with the ambassador of India on the state of bilateral relations between the two countries and finding ways and means to strengthen them further,” added the press release.

A similar ceremony was held in the neighbouring country of Djibouti, where Honorary Consul of India Nalin Kothari unfurled the tricolor.
