BRASILIA - Brazilian President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva has cancelled his visit to Canada for the G20 summit due to heavy floods in northeastern Brazil, a government spokesman said Friday.

Lula visited the flood affected areas Thursday and found the disaster was more serious than estimated, so he cancelled his Canada trip to focus on the disaster management, the spokesman said.

However, Brazilian Economy Minister Guido Mantega will attend the summit on his behalf, Xinhua reported.

The continuous heavy rain and floods in northeastern Brazil have killed at least 51 people and left tens of thousands homeless.
