Census workers find SC man who had fallen in home

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A knock on the door by two U.S. Census workers led to the rescue of a South Carolina man who had fallen in his home nearly 24 hours earlier.

The State newspaper reported that Barbara Westbrook and Debra Billings had agreed to cover 10 more houses in Columbia on Tuesday night before calling it a day.

The women heard a man’s voice when they knocked on his door, but couldn’t make out what he was saying because of noise from a passing train. After the train passed, Westbrook said she heard the man say he had gotten hurt when he fell.

Billings called 911 and the women asked neighbors for help. Neighbors removed a screen door and a teen kicked in the door.

Emergency workers took the man to a hospital for treatment. His name was not released.
