GANDHINAGAR - The Gujarat High Court Friday directed the state government to accept applications of students who have passed through CBSE and central boards for the post of “vidya sahayaks” (assistant teachers) in Gujarat.

The state government published an advertisement and sought applications from candidates for recruitment of 10,000 ‘vidya sahayaks’ in the state. The government has sought applications from the aspirants between May 28 and June 6.

One of the eligibility criteria for the post is the minimum qualification of higher secondary pass but from Gujarat state board only.

Students in Gujarat who have passed their higher secondary or school leaving certificate examinations of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) or other central boards moved the Gujarat High Court through advocates Kaushik Pujara and S.H. Iyer that the advertisement insisting on Gujarat state board pass was a clear discrimination against them. They stated that such recruitment would be violation of fundamental rights of the petitioners.

During the arguments, Director of Primary Education R.C. Raval assured the court that if the court directs the state would make sure that the software is modified so that applications of CBSE students, who may apply online, would also be accepted.

Allowing the petitioners’ plea, Justice D.H. Waghela directed the state government to consider the applications of CBSE and central board pass students of Gujarat for the recruitment process, which would be subject to the final verdict on the petition.
