Schwarz Pharma to pay $22 million in settlement

WASHINGTON — The Justice Department says Schwarz Pharma Inc. will pay $22 million for allegedly failing to disclose that two of its products did not qualify for federal health care coverage.

The Justice Department says false claims were filed with the government as a result of the company’s actions.

One of the drugs was Deponit, a skin patch used to prevent angina. The other was Hyoscymine Sulfate ER, which is used to treat stomach, intestinal and urinary tract disorders.

The department says the company did not tell the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services that the Food and Drug Administration had made a determination resulting in the two drugs being ineligible for government reimbursement.
