The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has announced to seize land of 1,000 landlords and distribute them among the landless villagers in eastern Indian state of Bihar.

The CPI-M plans to launch land-grab movement in Bihar from May 14 this year.

“We will seize surplus land of around 1,000 landlords in Bihar and then distribute them among the landless masses”, CPI-M politburo member Brinda Karat told reporters in Patna Friday evening.

She said in the first phase, the party would capture land of 32 landlords having 100 acres of land.

In the next phase, the CPI-M would seize the land of 968 landlords having more than 100 acres of land, said Karat.

Left parties and Maoists have together seized thousands of acres of lands of landlords or imposed a ban on farming in Bihar, creating tension for decades.

No govenrment has ever seriously tried to implement the land reforms and restore normalcy in the state.
