Chavez foe barred from talking to media about case

CARACAS, Venezuela — Venezuela’s highest court is barring an outspoken opponent of President Hugo Chavez from talking to news media about prosecutors charging him with striking a police official.

The order handed down Sunday by the Supreme Court prohibits opposition lawmaker Wilmer Azuaje from presenting his views on the case to any media outlet.

Azuaje previously has denied any wrongdoing, saying the charges are politically motivated because he accused Chavez’s family of profiting from its political power.

The lawmaker was released from police custody after appearing in court Saturday. The court order also says Azuaje was released on the condition he return to court every 15 days while awaiting trial.
