2 Guinea officers accused of crimes in new govt

CONAKRY, Guinea — A decree read by Guinea’s leadership on state TV announced that two army officers accused of grave crimes have been appointed ministers in Guinea’s nascent transitional government.

The decree issued late Tuesday said that Cmdr. Claude Pivi will stay on as minister in charge of presidential security. Lt. Col. Moussa Tiegboro has been appointed to a special ministerial post within Gen. Sekouba Konate’s office.

Tiegboro was named in a U.N. investigation as one of the principle actors behind a Sept. 28 massacre of at least 157 unarmed civilians.

Pivi is considered a rogue commander who is accused of torturing civilians, including a group of students he arrested outside a nightclub after discovering the side mirror on his SUV was missing.
