Defense Dept. probes Marine mental health care

WILMINGTON, N.C. — The Defense Department is investigating complaints of substandard mental health care at Camp Lejeune.

A North Carolina congressman who represents the area around the Marine Corps base said Thursday the department’s Inspector General office told him it is investigating. The Inspector General did not respond to an e-mail from The Associated Press.

Rep. Walter Jones asked for an investigation after complaints by Marines and their families and after reports of retailiation against a whistleblower.

Public questions about the quality of mental health care provided by a private contractor were raised by the firing last year of a brain trauma specialist who had complained to commanders about poor facilities, inadequate care programs and weak security.
