No rift between PPP, PML-N over President’s constitutional amnesty : Gilani

ISLAMABAD - : Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has rejected reports about differences between the Pakistan People Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) over the issue of constitutional amnesty to President Asif Ali Zardari.
Interacting with media persons at the Prime Minister’s Secretariat here, Gilani said he had never tried to defend the controversial amnesty law, the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO), either inside or outside Parliament.
Responding to a question, Gilani said the government would soon table a bill seeking the implementation of the Charter of Democracy (CoD), lifting the constitutional bar limiting terms in the Prime Minister’s office to not more than two times and granting greater provincial autonomy.
Meanwhile, PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif has said that being the country’s President he would have faced all charges in the court of law despite enjoying constitutional indemnity.
Talking to reporters after a meeting of the PML-N’s NWFP chapter, Sharif said he would have gone to the courts to get his name cleared of all allegations if he was the president of the country.
“I request the government to accept court verdicts, including the verdict against the National Reconciliation Ordinance, for the survival of the country,” The Daily Times quoted Sharif, as saying. (ANI)
