Rights body criticizes US Supreme Court ruling

VIENNA — An international human rights organization has criticized a U.S. Supreme Court ruling about election spending in America.

The criticism comes from a senior official of the 56-nation Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.

The head of its office that monitors democratic practices says the ruling effectively lifting limits on election spending by corporations and unions “threatens to further marginalize candidates without strong financial backing or extensive personal resources.”

Janez Lenarcic spoke Friday, a day after the 5-to-4 U.S. Supreme Court ruling.

was a political media/advertising professional in the ’80’s when the FEC put limits and stopped corporations, Unions, etc. from limltless spending on political campaigns, specifically political advertising. The country and politicians alike applauded this idea for many reasons, not the least of which was the fact that people should have the freedom to make their own decisions rather than being dictated to by their employers or Union Boss…
Now the Supreme Court comes along and says these limits are against the First Amendment. Corporations, Unions, etc. are NOT individuals … they are groups of individuals who often REQUIRE their members/employees to support certain candidates, issues that are private to the voter.
If a US citizen votes, he or she should do their own homework and make their own decisions about which lever to pull- not listen to those who make decisions that they deem in their own interests.
The Supreme Court has made a grievous error in making this decision and should apologize to the citizens of the USA and reverse this ruling!
