Grand jury probing former Memphis mayor disbands

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Associates of former Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton say a grand jury that was investigating allegations of corruption against him has disbanded.

No indictment has been issued but Herenton’s lawyer says some of the federal corruption laws at issue in the investigation are under scrutiny by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Attorney Robert Spence tells WREG-TV that Herenton is in good spirits and is preparing for his congressional race next year to challenge incumbent Democrat Steve Cohen.

The Commercial Appeal reported that grand jury witnesses were questioned about payments Herenton received while mayor from a land deal and annual Christmas parties financed by political supporters.

Prosecutors could decide later whether to have another grand jury take up the investigation.
