Ganpatsinh Vasava to be Gujarat assembly speaker

GANDHINAGAR - Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Ganpatsinh Vasava is set to be the next speaker of the Gujarat assembly.

Vasava, 40, legislator from Mangrol in south Gujarat, Wednesday filed his nomination as the ruling BJP nominee.

The election to the speaker’s post takes place due to the death of veteran BJP leader Ashok Bhatt. Vasava’s candidature is also being supported by the opposition Congress.

Vasava will take over in the budget session of the state assembly which begins Thursday.

Two-term legislator Vasava, hails from Vadi village Surat district. He is the secretary of the state BJP unit.

A tribal legislator elected from a reserved seat, Vasava has been the chairman of the house committee on tribal welfare and member of the business advisory committee.

Vasava would be the 20th Speaker of the assembly and the first tribal to hold the post.

Meanwhile, the opposition Congress has demanded that the deputy speaker should be from its party.
