NEW DELHI - The Congress Friday welcomed senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani’s apology to Congress president Sonia Gandhi over a party task force report alleging she had accounts in Swiss banks, but said they had heard of the apology only in the media.

“I have no concrete evidence, and what I have seen is only in the media, but if it is true it is welcome,” Congress spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed told reporters.

Some media reports quoted Advani as apologising to Gandhi for a BJP-appointed taskforce report which had alleged that she and her late husband Rajiv Gandhi had accounts in Swiss banks. The media reports said that Advani had written a letter to Gandhi.

“As far as our party is concerned and I am concerned, we have seen the reports in media and have no concrete information about it, but if it is true then it is a welcome decision,” Ahmed said in reply to a question.

On Feb 1, the NDA released a booklet “Indian Black Money Abroad in Secret Banks and Tax Havens”, that contained the allegation against Gandhi and her late husband.
