CAIRO/WASHINGTON - Embattled Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak will address the nation Thursday night, amid swirling rumours that he is likely to step down.

Mubarak will address the nation from the presidential headquarters in Cairo, said state TV.

An official of Egypt’s ruling party told CNN Thursday that the process of transition was underway and he expected the president to address the nation soon.

Mubarak, 82, is under intense pressure to end his nearly 30-year rule following mass protests that have swept across the country. The protests, which began Jan 25, have considerably intensified with demonstrators camping in downtown Cairo’s Tahrir square.

The president has said he is prepared to step down at the end of his term in September, but not now. He has even warned that there could be chaos if he left now.
