JAMMU - Union Home Minister P. Chidamabaram would be visiting Kishtwar, a mountainous district northeast of Jammu, during his two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir beginning Thursday to review the security situation and take stock of the political developments.

Chidambaram would be interacting with district level officers of Kishtwar district, tucked in the Himalayas about 200 km northeast of Jammu, on Friday where he would be “assessing the problems faced by the people in the remote areas”, an official source told IANS Monday.

“The home minister’s meetings would be on the pattern adopted by him in the Kashmir Valley where he had held a similar meeting in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district,” the source said.

Chidambaram is keen to have a comprehensive view of the situation in all parts of Jammu and Kashmir. He will also be having a one-on-one meeting with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah during the visit. The two are likely to exchange notes on the current situation in the state and the administrative and political measures needed to address the Kashmir issue, the sources said.

The Kashmir Valley saw months of unrest in the summer of 2010 where over 100 people were killed in clashes between security forces and stone-pelting mobs.
