CHANDIGARH - The Bharatiya Janata Party youth wing’s Rashtriya Ekta Yatra, a nationwide campaign for unity, will reach here Friday evening.

Members of the Chandigarh unit of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) have made elaborate arrangements to welcome those who have joined the campaign that started from Kolkata Jan 12, party leaders said.

“Hundreds of members of BJYM and senior leaders of the BJP will welcome this yatra in Chandigarh. It had entered Delhi yesterday (Thursday) and today (Friday) it travelled through different parts of Haryana, including Panipat, Karnal and Ambala,” a BJYM spokesperson here told IANS.

He added, “It is expected to enter Chandigarh around 7 p.m. Nearly 1,000 vehicles will pass through various sectors of Chandigarh and the yatra would stop at Sector 15 here.”

BJYM’s national president Anurag Thakur is leading the yatra.

BJP president Nitin Gadkari had flagged off this yatra in Kolkata Jan 12. It is to culminate Jan 26 with the BJP’s planned national flag hoisting at Srinagar’s Lal Chowk in the Kashmir Valley.

The Jammu and Kashmir government has expressed deep reservations about the BJP’s flag hoisting plan, terming it as a bid to inflame communal passions in the valley, and separatist leaders have voiced their strong opposition to it.

The 15-day yatra was planned to cover a distance of over 3,000 km and pass through 12 states.
