Medvedev warns leaked US cables can hurt world relations

MOSCOW - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev Friday accused the US diplomatic corps of showing their cynicism in the language used in their confidential messages now being leaked by WikiLeaks.

In remarks while hosting Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi in Sotchi, a Black Sea resort, Medvedev said the diplomats’ opinions now being published exposed “the entire extent of the cynicism” of the Americans.

When such injurious remarks about others are revealed, they could “inflict overall damage on the foreign political contacts”, he said.

Despite the revelations — among others, the exposed US diplomatic posts compared Russian Premier Vladimir Putin and Medvedev as the comic book figures Batman and Robin — the Kremlin boss said Moscow wants to move closer to Washington.

In his initial reaction to the WikiLeaks documents, Medvedev had joked that the Americans would experience “real joy” if they could read what the Russian secret service or foreign ministry was writing about them.
