NEW YORK - The US has alerted India on an upcoming publication of classified documents by online whistleblower WikiLeaks, which it says may harm American interests and create tension with its “friends”.

“We have reached out to India to warn them about a possible release of documents,” State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said.

“We do not know precisely what WikiLeaks has or what it plans to do. We have made our position clear. These documents should not be released,” Crowley said.

It is not known what the documents are about, or whether India is mentioned.

In October, WikiLeaks published nearly 400,000 classified US military documents related to the war in Iraq. It had previously published tens of thousands of military papers about Afghanistan.

Crowley said via Twitter that the State Department has also contacted leaders in Germany, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Britain, France and Afghanistan.
