Nation pays tribute to Indira on 93rd birth anniversary

NEW DELHI - The nation paid tribute to India’s first woman prime minister Indira Gandhi on her 93rd birth anniversary Friday.

President Pratibha Patil and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh offered floral tributes at Shakti Sthal - Indira Gandhi’s memorial on the banks of river Yamuna.

Vice President Hamid Ansari, United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar also visited the memorial and paid homage to the late leader.

To commemorate the occasion, the women and child development ministry will unveil the Rajiv Gandhi Scheme for Empowerment of Adolescent Girls (RGSEAG-SABLA) Friday evening.

The scheme aims to empower adolescent girls by improving their nutritional and health standards and vocational skills.
