Congress party welcomes Aung San Suu Kyi’s release

NEW DELHI - The Indian National Congress here on Sunday welcomed the release of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi by Myanmar’s military government after long imprisonment.

“The Congress party recalls her struggle for democratic rights and acknowledges her as a symbol of resistance, freedom and human rights. The party fondly remembers Ms. Suu Kyi’s stay in India with her mother in her formative yers and also her father, General Aung San’s immense contributionin builiding the new Myanmar,” said Congress Spokesman Janardan in a release today.

Meanwhile, in Yangoon, Suu Kyi, who has been freed from seven years of house arrest, told thousands of supporters on Sunday that she would continue to fight for human rights and the rule of law. (ANI)
