Ex-Oz PM and ‘man of steel’ Howard is just a footnote in Bush memoirs

SYDNEY - Former US president George W. Bush appears to have confined his “deputy sheriff” and ex-Australian Prime Minister John Howard to little more than a footnote in his just-published memoirs-Decision Points.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Bush includes Howard in a list of leaders who in 2002 shared the Bush administration’s assessment of the threat posed by Iraq.

He also notes that Howard - a “staunch advocate” of confronting Saddam Hussein - was one of many allies who told him that a United Nations resolution was essential for winning public support for action against the dictator.

The only other reference is a footnote to observations the former president makes about former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who features heavily in the Bush tome, reflecting the primacy of the US-British “special relationship”.

Bush writes glowingly of Blair, who shared his “faith in the transformative power of liberty” and who “had courage”. “No issue demonstrated it more clearly than Iraq,” writes the 43rd US president.

The Bush memoirs shed little new light on his eight years in the White House. (ANI)
