Poll: NY governor’s race no longer tight

ALBANY, N.Y. — A new poll shows Democrat Andrew Cuomo with an 18-point edge over Republican Carl Paladino in New York’s race for governor, just weeks after the same poll said the candidates were six points apart.

The Quinnipiac (KWIHN’-uh-pee-ak) University poll of likely voters released Thursday gives Cuomo a 55 percent to 37 percent lead.

The poll also shows that among New Yorkers who describe themselves as “angry” voters, most prefer Paladino.

But Quinnpiac’s Maurice Carroll says Paladino’s anger is proving too angry for many New Yorkers. The poll finds less than a third of likely voters now think Paladino is right for the governor’s job.

In the Sept. 22 poll, Cuomo had a 49 percent to 43 percent edge.

For Thursday’s poll, Quinnipiac questioned 1,141 likely voters from Oct. 1-5. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.9 points.
