Nigeria: More candidates declare for presidency

ABUJA, Nigeria — Two new candidates have declared for Nigeria’s presidential election as confusion continues over when the poll actually will be held.

Kwara state Gov. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, a Muslim, announced Monday he would seek the nomination of the ruling People’s Democratic Party. That leaves a field of four Muslims competing against President Goodluck Jonathan, a Christian, in the party’s primary.

Meanwhile, Nuhu Ribadu announced he would seek the nomination of the Action Congress of Nigeria, the oil-rich nation’s biggest opposition party.

Ribadu served as the chief of the nation’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, pursuing corruption cases until being pushed out of power.

The election was scheduled for Jan. 22, but electoral officials have asked for a delay.
