Lawmaker criticizes military over water at NC base

WASHINGTON — A lawmaker is accusing military leaders of caring more about public relations than helping Marines sickened by contaminated water at North Carolina’s Camp Lejeune.

Rep. Brad Miller is leading a House hearing on the contamination Thursday. The North Carolina Democrat says those leaders are hiding behind science, which has provided to be slow and uncertain about the problems.

Wells at the base were contaminated by fuel leaks and other sources of pollution. Health officials believe as many as 1 million people may have been exposed to tainted water before the wells were closed two decades ago.
