THIRUVANANTHAPURAM - State Election Commissioner P. Kamalkutty Tuesday declared that the polling to the local bodies in the state will be held in two phases Oct 23 and 25.
Addressing reporters here, he said the counting would take place Oct 27.
A salient feature of the elections would be that women will get 50 percent seats to contest, and as a result 605 local bodies of the total 1,208 in the state will be headed by women.
Elections are being held to fill up close to 22,000 seats in the three-tier local bodies structure that the state administration has, Kamalkutty said.
“Oct 4 would be the last date for filing of nominations. The model code of conduct comes into place with effect from now. We are holding a meeting of all the registered political parties Wednesday to discuss on the model code of conduct,” he said.
Electronic voting machines would be used in cities whereas conventional ballot papers would be used in the rural areas to conduct these elections.
“Around Rs.65 crore is the estimated expense for the polls, in which 2.5 lakh officials would be looking after its smooth conduct,” said Kamalkutty.
