Motion: Kilpatrick is ‘darker version’ of Clinton
DETROIT — Attorneys for Kwame Kilpatrick, the former Detroit mayor who is facing legal troubles over his court-ordered restitution, say their client is viewed by many as a “darker version” of ex-President Bill Clinton.
Lawyer Daniel Hajji makes that claim in a motion seeking to postpone an arraignment Kilpatrick faces Friday for a probation violation.
The former mayor owes the city $1 million as part of his guilty plea to obstruction of justice in 2008. He could face more jail time for failing to make a restitution payment last week.
Hajji likens his client, who is black, to Clinton, who initially denied he had an extramarital tryst with a former White House intern. Published text messages revealed that Kilpatrick and his chief of staff had a romantic relationship and lied about it on the stand.
